Been here a few times for lunch with my colleague who is a bit noodle soup-happy. Beef ball noodles, when done right, attract a very large lunchtime queue anywhere in Singapore. Hock Lam happens to be near Raffles Place which means the queue will stretch way out the door just about every work day in Singapore after 12.
My disdain for queues leads me to get to most lunch places around 11:45 and avoid the queues altogether. There are a couple other beef ball noodle places nearby but this is the best one nearby the mrt.
Hock Lam has seating upstairs, and the food comes very fast so they can maintain a high turnover.
They have homemade barley and some other standard drinks which are done right, I can’t stand when the barley is too sweet. The beef ball noodle let’s you choose your toppings and noodle type like normal. The key here is the consistency. The soup is tasty and the chili is good. You know every time that you’re getting a high quality soup, that the noodles will be cooked well and you’ll leave satisfied.
